Rumela Sen, Columbia University

Professor, School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), Columbia University


Dr. Rumela Sen is a political scientist and Professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA).

Her research focuses on civil conflict, rebel governance, political development, and state-building in the Global South, particularly South Asia. Her first book, Farewell to Arms: How Rebels Retire without Getting Killed (Oxford University Press, 2021), examines how Maoist rebels in India disengage from armed movements and re-enter democratic politics. Based on extensive fieldwork in conflict zones in India, the book draws on interviews with current and former rebels.

More recently, her research examines digital authoritarianism and transnational repression,

Including the evolving landscape of digital repression before and after generative AI. She has also written on hate during COVID-19 and contemporary Nepali politics. Her work has appeared in academic and public-facing outlets, including Jacobin, East Asia Forum, India in Transition, Hindu Business Line, and Ratopati, among others.


Dr. Sen received her PhD in Government from Cornell University and holds an MA from Villanova University and an MA in International Relations from Jadavpur University.
